Safety during the Winter and Spring months
We have made it through January and we welcome the coming of spring but we must remember safety during the colder months!
Take extra care at this time of the year as road and pavement surfaces can be icy and may be slippery.
Warmth and Visibility
Dress warmly, with a waterproof top layer. Some scooters have a weather cab to protect you from the worst of the winter. The alternative is to invest in good rainproof protection.
Be visible in the gloom – use your lights, and consider some high visibility accessories. You can get strips to attach to sleeves and legs, as well as gilets and bags made with reflective material.
Remember that the range of your scooter will be less in cold weather.
It is a good idea to always have a mobile phone on you, in case of emergency. Whilst a number of scooters come with built-in phone chargers, like the Veleco Faster model, it would still be wise to check that it is charged up, and programmed with the numbers you might need.
You can also get GPS trackers, so your loved-ones know exactly where to find you.
Looking after your scooter
Mobility scooters may be at risk of rust, especially in Winter, when it is easy to get your scooter wet. Remember to clean and wipe it dry after every use. You should always store your scooters in a dry place with easy accessibility.
If you don’t use your scooter during the winter months, make sure to keep the battery charged. If it becomes completely discharged, it may not be work when you want to use it in the spring.
Always check the pressure of your tyres and ensure that they are inflated to the manufacturers specifications. This will not only ensure a safe ride but will also ensure a longer life span of your tyres.
If your scooter is stored outdoors, it needs protecting from the winter weather, with a waterproof cover. Damp can play havoc with the electronics.
